Candidate Announces for County Legislature 21st District ROCHESTER-- With a pledge to vigorously pursue living wage jobs, accessible health care and responsive county services Carrie Andrews, Democrat, announced her intention to seek the Democratic designation for County Legislature in the 21st Legislative District. The position is currently held by Christopher Wilmot-R, who is term limited and precluded from seeking re-election in 2005. Andrews is currently employed as a labor relations specialist for New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), representing thousands of area working families who work for local school districts. She has advocated on behalf of working women and men throughout her career as a union activist. “Working families have had enough tough talk with little to show for it,” said Andrews, “I have a proven record of delivering the living wages, health care benefits, family leave and quality representation that many families lack in the 21st district,” she said. Andrews looks to include area neighborhood leaders to create a progressive vision to rebuild an area of the City of Rochester hard-hit by a loss of jobs and closing of small businesses. “In order to rebuild our neighborhoods, we must listen to the families who call them home,” said Andrews, “I have the experience of building a broad consensus among groups with varying interests and the drive to see our community thrive,” she said. Andrews graduated from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She has been working on local voter registration efforts with Metro Justice, volunteered with the United Way’s CASH Program and helped create and launch Dial-A-Teacher, Inc.’s after school tutoring program at several city schools, including Frederick Douglass Preparatory Academy, East High School, Dr. Freddie Thomas High School, and No. 45 School. This program now provides free tutoring for over 700 students in the city school district. Andrews was employed by the Rochester Teachers Association prior to working with NYSUT. Andrews worked with the Rochester City School District’s Advisory Council for Title I (DACT) to educate parents about the No Child Left Behind Act and their rights under that law. She continues to provide training to school-based planning teams, Parent Teacher Associations and other interested groups about this law. Andrews is currently involved with the 21st Century African American Leadership Council to address issues of race relations in Rochester.
