Introductory speech by Carla Palumbo, County Legislator in the 28th District

May 7, 2005
Good Morning! My name is Carla Palumbo, and I'm the County Legislator representing the 28th District in the Northwest Part of Rochester. I'm also the Assistant Minority Leader of the Democratic Caucus.

Today, I have the pleasure of introducing someone very special to you -- not because of who she is, but because of what she represents.

Carrie Andrews, who is running for the first time as a candidate for public office, is part of the next generation of Democrats. She's not part of the traditional establishment within the Democratic Party. She's fiercely independent, highly motivated, and a new voice for Progressive Democrats.

And, despite the best efforts of the Democratic Machine to dissuade her, Carrie Andrews is here before you today to announce that she'll seek the County Legislature Seat representing the 21st District. She wasn't dissuaded when they stacked the committee against her, or when they tried to change the rules on her, or when the party leadership deserted a fair process. Instead, she stood her ground and fought back.

That's the sort of person I need to help me in the County Legislature -- and that's the sort of person who will be representing the neighborhoods -- ALL the neighborhoods -- of the North East Side.

We face some very serious challenges in our community. We're losing jobs. Our once strong economy is faltering. Our neighborhoods are crumbling. Our young people are fleeing the City. And, we are in a constant battle to get our fair share of shrinking resources.

We must elect people to the legislature who are willing to fight for working families -- fight for our fair share -- and fight for what is right.

Carrie Andrews is one of those people. She'll provide a strong, new voice for the people of the 21st.

So, without further ado, I would like to present to you, your next Monroe County Legislator -- Carrie Andrews.

UNITE-HERE

"In the next issue of Reflections, the [UNITE-HERE] Joint Board will endorse a slate of candidates for this November's elections. But, one candidate - Carrie Andrews - has already received the Board's endorsement and help in her bid for a seat on the Monroe County Legislature.

That's no surprise considering who Andrews is. For starters, she's a card-carrying union member who strongly supports labor issues and a prominent Rochester-area activist for social and economic justice.

But, Andrews also played an important role recently in bringing members of an independent union at the Moosewood restaurant in Ithaca into the Joint Board family. She also actively supported UNITE HERE's recent "0406" campaign, which seeks to set the same expiration date for contracts the union has with major hotels across the country."
